Urban Church Wellness Expands Preventive Healthcare Services at Milwaukee Area Churches
Columbia St. Mary’s is partnering with the The General Baptist State Convention of WI Inc, (GBSC) to provide health screenings and other preventive care through churches in the Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin area.
The GBSC Covenant will provide church members with access to health education, health care screenings, and health counseling services. Each church will name a current Health Ambassador volunteer to work in partnership with Columbia St. Mary’s Parish Nurses and Community Health Workers to accomplish collaborative health goals.
The partnership will make many health care services available to members, including mammography screening, colorectal cancer screening, prostate screening, cooking classes, nutritional education, diabetes education, assistance regarding advance care directives, and development of programs suggested by the Health Ambassador volunteers.
The General Baptist State Convention of Wisconsin Inc.
Founded in 1886, the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. (Convention) is the nation’s oldest and largest African American religious convention with an estimated membership of 7.5 million. The National President, Reverend Dr. Julius R. Scruggs has led the organization since 2009.
Reverend Dr. Garry Levy was installed as the 5th President of the General Baptist State Convention of Wisconsin, Inc. (GBSC) in October 2011. Reverend Dr. Garry Levy serves as the pastor of the True Love Missionary Baptist Church in Milwaukee Wisconsin (2006).
Mission – the mission of the convention is to fulfill the great commission of Jesus Christ through preaching, teaching, and healing.
Purpose –The purpose of which is to foster a deeper interest in Baptist missions, provide religious education to children and adults to advance Baptist principles among those affiliated with the member churches of the convention.
Health and Wellness
During the 106th Congress Annual Session, the Health Outreach and Prevention Education Initiative (H.O.P.E.) was launched. African Americans are disproportionately affected by many preventable disease processes. This program aims to bring HOPE to our communities as we take actions that will dramatically improve our health and positively impact our total well-being.
Vision- All National Baptist churches will have vibrant health and wellness ministries resulting in members being good stewards of their health and wellness.
Mission- To reach out across the depth and breadth of our denomination to educate and inspire our fellow National Baptists to commit to healthier lifestyles through health and wellness education, referral resources and collateral material, and trained facilitators as resource persons.
